The Museum without walls

On the 27th of February I arrived in my new home in the beautiful area of Gyeongju,  also know as the "Museum without walls" it's not difficult to see why this area has been given this name for it is one of the oldest ad most beautiful  areas in Korea , surrounded by mountains , temples and tombs. Yes , tombs . Gyeongju is full of ancient tombs from the Silla dynasty. If you were to walk past one you would probably think it resembles something similar to the hobbits Shire in Lord of the rings , or the Teletubbie's house, but still despite its odd appearance these tombs carry a history and a story of life in Gyeongju  from thousands of years ago. I decided to take myself for a little stroll to one of the parks where many tombs can be found. One of the biggest tombs can be found in this park . Due to lack of human existence I had to resort to self timer to get a few shots of me with the tombs.

Gyeongju is also known for its temples. I have yet to go see one but one of the oldest and most beautiful temples , Bulguksa  is situated on my doorstep in the mountains. I have no doubt that when the cherry blossoms bloom this will make for a great day out.

But by far the most fascinating things to me are the churches. Believe it people Christianity is the second largest religion in Korea and Gyeongju is be no means short of churches. Catholicism  is strong in Gyeongbuk province  and so Catholic churches can be found everywhere , along with Presbyterian churches.

I went to an international worship church on Sunday with my friend Robyn as I feel my Korean is not at a level that will permit me  to understand a Catholic sermon in Korean. I'm hoping that by Easter my Korean would have improved  enough so that I can attend a traditional Korean Catholic service.

I have been in Gyeongju for less  than a week but I can honestly already say that I love it. Walking has become my new hobby , its amazing how much more you see on foot . So many little quaint places that I would have missed out on had I taken a bus or a taxi. Yes walking at night in minus degree weather or in the early morning does lead to minor frost bite and brain freeze but in my opinion its worth it. I have  already formed friendships with  the local people just by walking on the street.
Cycling is huge here. There are more bicycles than soju bottles and as result I plan on buying one so that I can really get around and explore my beautiful area .Bring on the 25th of March and that fat pay cheque!

I really feel like I have been sent to the right area and I feel truly blessed to be here. I didn't know what to expect when I arrived , I was so nervous  and didn't know if I would even last the first week , But I have and I feel pretty proud of myself.
